October 3, 2009 - The Historic Williamsburg MG Touring Society Wilderness Tour - A last minute change of plans allowed me to take Wildflower (TC5308) out today for a road rally in and around Williamsburg VA.  I got up early and drove the 45 miles to Williamsburg in order to make sure I was there for the 9:15 muster. The meeting spot was Great Harvest Bread Company, where the group eventually gathered and enjoyed fresh baked rolls and industrial-strength coffee  (I have to admit that I am a coffee wimp).    The tour group consisted of SIX MG TCs, an MG TD, an MG TF, and a new Toyota minivan (there's always one in every crowd). Happily, called-for rain didn't materialize, and we had a beautiful sunny day.  Rallye Master Bill Banfield (driving the red TD) sent the first car off right on time, with the rest following about 3 minutes apart.  I was the third car, traveling at a distinct disadvantage - no navigator, and Williamsburg is not my home territory.  The rallye consisted of basic turn instructions with no street names or distances (Turn right at stop.  Turn left at T, etc) that took us through the outskirts of Williamsburg.  Twisty country roads, lots of trees and tobacco fields, and very little traffic.  As anyone who had run one of these gimmick rallyes before knows, it didn't take long before rallye participants started seeing each other going opposite directions on the same road.  Having been informed by the rallye master that there were long distances between some of the directions, I made my best guesses.  However, when I had reached the expected total miles and was at least 20 miles from the starting point, I figured something might be a wee bit off.   (Turns out my definition of a 'T' intersection didn't quite match up to the rally planner's definition).  So I threw in the flag and called in for the destination.  I ended up driving 78 miles on a 50-mile rallye, but it was still a fun drive.  Everyone made it back to Victoria's restaurant in Williamsburg, where I was NOT the last car in.  (OK, next to last).  Everyone had a great time, and they are already trying to plan another rallye for next year.

Wildflower was first in line, since I got there early from Norfolk

The 'modern' TF - surprisingly one of only two non-TC MGs on the tour!

The red TD belonged to our Rally Master. The only other non-TC MG on the run.

No, they aren't having car trouble. Just pushing ahead to make room for someone to get in behnid them.

More arriving.

Great Harvest Bread Company - good rolls, coffee to strip paint with.

Everyone in place and ready to go!

The Rally Master gives out instructions

And the first car is off!

Hmmm. He must have gotten 'Safety Fast' confused with 'Unsafely Faaast'

Last but not least.... they even came in after me at the end!

A rare shot of Wildflower with her driver.

The rally took us through some really nice back roads.

The area around Williamsburg has some great scenery.

Of course, any scenery is always improved by a TC.

Hills, curves, woods, a sunny day, and a TC. How can you NOT have a good time?

More nice country scenery plus TC.

At the Restaurant!

Victorias has good food and a nice atmosphere.

We were a loud and happy group - luckily, we were mostly the only ones there!
